Cortina Ice Boulder 2000 – the program
From the 28-30 January 2000 Cortina d'Ampezzo will host, for the second consecutive year, the Ice Bouldering Competition.
From the 28-30 January 2000 Cortina d'Ampezzo will host, for the second consecutive year, the Ice Bouldering Competition. Sadly this event will be the only one of its kind in this years Ice World Cup circuit, since the Chamonix Bouldering Competition has now officially been cancelled.
As in the previous years competition, an artificial icefall will be set up at the top of the Faloria cable car. The first of its kind in 1999, it proved to be spectacular and highly enjoyable event for athletes and crowd alike.
New rules set out by the IWC, the Ice Climbing World Cup Committee, now include banning the use of wrist loops. The routes now demand far more power and stamina, since resting is now almost impossible.
Other interesting rules emerge with regard to the bouldering competitions. Sensibly, the number of attempts is now taken into consideration if two athletes have the points, but the main criteria on which the competition is judged is height reached. A series of starting and finishing holes must be hooked and the boulder is divided into three zones, each valued differently. Only when the athlete makes at least three points of contact (both ice axes and one crampon) is a zone awarded.
