At the end of June Giovanni Zanettin, a mountain guide from Cortina, established a pleasant new rock climb up Cason de Formin in the Croda da Lago mountain chain. Zanettin had noticed a possible line to the right of the famous Dallago and on 30 June 2012 together with his brother Federico and their climbing partner Aldo Vascellari he made the first ascent of “Via Leila” which has been dedicated to his girlfriend.

At the end of July Zanettin returned with fellow mountain guide Walter Bachmann to render the route safer and added some bolts which are now located on all belays and also some sections of the route. According to Zanettin, difficulties never exceed V+ and the rock quality is very good, even though this - like all Dolomite routes of this grade - will require some cleaning.

It seems as if Cason de Formin has caught the attention of other climbers, too, as a few days ago Massimo Da Pozzo established an interesting new line close to Via Leila.

The surroundings are undoubtedly extremely beautiful and tranquil; Cason de Formin is fortunately far removed from the traffic and motorbikes which can unfortunately be heard all too clearly on other Dolomite peaks such as Torri del Falzarego, Lagazuoi, Torri del Sella etc.

Our thanks therefore go to the trio for having created yet another splendid route to play on!

Errata 12/09/2012
Contrary to what we published previously, Via Leila on Cima Cason de Formin (Croda da Lago, Dolomites) is not a new route but a lower variation (5 pitches) to Via Leber Kenedi first ascended in 1990 by Federico Michielli and Michele Da Pozzo. Read the news report.
