Stefano Carnati claims two 9a's at Mišja Peč in Slovenia
The weekend warrior par excellence, Italy's Stefano Carnati, is currently doing his PhD in environmental chemistry at Ljubljana in, Slovenia and, needless to say, the 25-year-old is making the most of his six-month stay abroad.
A month ago at Mišja Peč he sent the short and ultra-overhanging 9a Sanjski par extension, while last Sunday he made a rare repeat of the ultra-long 9a Xaxid Hostel. Established by Tomáš Mrázek in 2009 and originally graded 9a+, this route climbs in the center of the enormous limestone crag and offers an intense crux sequence off a smooth crimp that requires perfect friction and total control. Between these two sends Carnati wasted no time and also repeated All in, I'm out, an intense 8c+ at the winter crag Kompanj in Croatia.
Carnati has 9b and 8C+ under his belt (Erebor at Arco and Vecchio Leone Sit Start at Brione) and it is obvious therefore that these most recent 9a's could almost be taken for granted. What cannot be overlooked though is the phenomenal form that Carnati has managed to reach in recent years, despite the fact that he has always been focused primarily on his studies; almost all his sends have been carried out on Saturdays and Sundays, or during the school holidays. Weekend warrior indeed!
