American off-width specialist Pamela Shanti Pack
At first glance you wouldn't bet too much on Pamela Shanti Pack climbing an offwidth crack. But as often happens looks can be deceptive and the small, blond American climber is in fact one of the world's best offwidth climbers. Be it man or woman. Her numerous repeats and first ascents testament this, such as her 2009 testpiece Gabriel (5.13c) located in the beautiful red Zion canyon and, more recently, The Forever War (5.13c/d R) which is primed to be the hardest route of its genre in the Vedauwoo area. It's worth noting that the route warrants the R suffix which indicates that despite its two bolts the overhanging crack is considered dangerous. Pack knows this well enough, since during a failed attempt she injured a kidney, needed two bouts of surgery and spent 5 days in hospital. Yes, a true battle indeed!
