16 and counting! Sixteen 9a's, all freed by Markus Bock during the last ten years at the crags in Germany's Frankenjura, ever since Bock the German climber entered the realm of utmost difficulties in 2003 with the first ascent of Unplugged 9a. A decade of searching for something new and extreme on the limestone outcrops dotted around Nürnberg, that this autumn resulted in another two 9a first ascents. The routes in question are Black Label and Working Class, and they are joined by two 8c+ first ascents, Graveyard Rodeo and Underneath Everything. What makes the Frankenjura so special? "Quite simply the incomparable beautiful landscape and the unique climbing style" Bock told Planetmountain, decisively and to the point. Just like his routes.
