Circa 10 attempts, spread out over two days, were all that Gabriele Moroni needed to get to grips with Back Road, the new 9a freed by Adam Ondra above Rovereto a few weeks ago. "I first tried it last Saturday and immediately realised that I could send it quickly" explained Moroni, adding "The route overhangs 40° constantly, before finishing up a slab. It first climbs a 15m8a, and this is followed by a dozen more intense moves, somewhere in the 8A+ boulder region, up small crimps and pinches." Moroni redpointed the route earlier today, after having fallen from the final hold, and secured the first repeat.
