Elba Discovery #1, the first Rock Slave XP 2014 video
In this first episode the team unearths a new sector, covered in lichen and brambles. At the end of a hard day’s gardening and climbing this sector reveals some of the island’s most coveted jewels.
This year it was Isola d’Elba, the island that forms part of the Tuscan archipelago, that acted as the backdrop to our continuous search for the perfect line. Hence the title, Elba discovery.
As always, the basis for this short trip was the desire to unite a group of young climbers who share the same love for climbing but above all who were motivated to clean more boulders and climb more new lines than they'd ever done close to home. The climbers knew they only had a really short time to give it their best shot. Even better than their best.
This alchemy of enthusiasm, places and people enabled us to squeeze the most out of every day, from dawn till dusk, brushing and chalking the western part of the island, the most mountainous area where Monte Capanna overlooks the sea on both its sides.
One full day for each sector that, after hours of brushing and chopping (when we were kind) and just as many hours of attempts, gave way in the evening to names, grades and the odd line of chalk.
4 days, 2 completely new sectors, 40 problems, one British trad route are the only traces left behind on the element that renders us forever slaves to our passion

XP, an acronym that stands for Experience. This is the name of the annual Rock Slave team meeting, in search of the perfect line. Led by Marzio Nardi, a handful of young rock slaves are taken to different parts of Italy, armed with nothing more than a wire brush, and are left to their own accord in a climbing area that is still untouched. The sole aim is to climb, fueled by the rock and their own imagination, by their moves, ideas, attempts, layers of skin that will never return. The essence of climbing.
