Ice climbing beyond Cogne, Valle d'Aosta, Italy

Enrico Bonino introduces 4 icefalls which rarely come into condition and which have reformed during this exceptional winter in Valle d'Aosta, Italy. Located between Valsavarenche and Valtournenche, they are off the beaten track from the more famous areas around Cogne.

This year the Greek myths Febo and Chione (the Gods of Sun and Snow) really paid attention to the many letters sent by crazed ice climbers in search of new emotions. The ice climbing season started early and in December many falls were already in condition. But the ensuing alternation of sun and snow meant that many almost forgotten about icefalls have woken up from their deep hibernation.

Valsavarenche and the lower Valtournenche are without a doubt the main players this season and have become a valid alternative from the "usual" Cogne. These popular summer valleys become desolate and wild in winter but, at least this season, they are covered in snow (which this year really will not go amiss). The animals descend in search for food and it often happens that you will have to give way to steinbocks as they cross the road.

This is the environment with surrounds ephemeral icefalls such as La Valse à Trois Manches, Alla Ricerca del Nador, Missione Compiuta and En Attendant Marlier.
