This middle-grade itinerary leads through First World War battleground and reveals the incomparable panorama of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo.
Getting there
From Cortina to Misurina and on to Lago d'Antorno (roughly 16 km. from Cortina). Access
From Lago d'Antorno take the motor-sled taxi service to Rif. Bosi (2205m). Itinerary
From Rif. Bosi begin by walking to the small church dedicated to the soldiers who died during the First World War. Continue upwards to reach the Monte Piana plateau along path no. 122, past striking evidence of the Great War. Tragic testament to the bitter battles fought out in this region, the snow-covered trenches bring home the enormous sacrifices made by the soldiers. Locked in terrible and stressful trench warfare high up in the Cortina mountains, their fate has no need for further comment.
Continue to the pyramidal monument to the poet Giosuè Carducci. It was destroyed and the start of the war and later rebuilt, and now acts as an excellent rest and vantage point.
The view onto the Tre Cime di Lavaredo can rightly be regarded as one of the most dramatic and beautiful in the Dolomites. After having taken it in the itinerary descends to the Col Forcella dei Castrati to return to Rif Bosi. Descent
From Rifugio Bosi return by motor-sled to Lago d’Antorno. Alternatively, sledge back down to the car park. Sledges can be rented from the restaurant “La baita” at Misurina. Gear
Normal equipment for winter walking, snowshoes and poles. Difficulty
Take care not to fall into the holes and trenches which may be covered with snow.
