UIAA General Assembly 2001

The UIAA General Assembly 2001 was held in St. Johann, Austria on 11-14 October 2001.
The UIAA General Assembly 2001 was held in St. Johann, Austria on 11-14 October 2001. The agenda included, amongst others, the election of a new Management Committee for the International Council for Competition Climbing (ICC). The main developments of this Assembly are summarised below.


Management Committee ICC
The election of new Management Committee of ICC International Council for Competition Climbing resulted in the following:
  • Marco Scolaris (ITA), President
  • Alexander Piratinsky (RUS), Vice-President
  • Reindert Lenselink (NED), Secretary General
  • Helmut Knabl (AUT), Treasurer
  • Wolfgang Wabel (GER)
  • Graeme Alderson (GBR)
  • Pierre Henry Paillasson (FRA)
  • Homayoun Bakhtiari (IRI)

Scolaris, the only candidate for President, was elected unanimously with only one abstination.


Former President’s report
The former President Pascal Mouche (FRA) summarised the successes of the past four years: the increase in number of member states, now 55the creation of a new Continental Committee (North and South America), the increase in World Cup stages after the crisis in the mid-90’s, the trustworthiness of judges and rules, the increase in prize money.


Strategic Plan
The Strategic Plan reproduced below was adopted unanimously by the General Assembly and outlines the goals for the next four years.

  • To put maximum efforts in order to be part of the Olympic family, and for competition climbing being included in the Olympic Games.
  • To keep the sport of competition climbing clean, also promoting informative campaigns, in accordance with the relevant International bodies, for athletes, coaches and member federations.
  • To help and to support the development of competition climbing throughout the world, through the action of the Continental Councils and the Technical Commissions.
  • To increase the number of international competitions, with a special attention to youth competitions, and Continental and Regional circuits.
  • To train International Officials: Judges and Forerunners.
  • To promote and to control good sporting practice. To promote exchanges amongst high-level competitors to improve their sporting performance.


Olympic Diploma
Following their reports, the Commission Presidents and Presidents and Secretaries General of the ICC & ISMC were given the Olympic Diploma, signed by former IOC President H.E. Juan Antonio Samaranch, in the framework of the current International Year of Volunteers.


Sports and Development Director
For the first time ever the employment of a Sports and Development Director (Roger Payne) was approved. His job is to act as a reference point for and promoter of the UIAA initiatives.


International Year of the Mountains 2002
In connection with the International Year of the Mountains 2002 a detailed report was given about various activities planned in conjunction with the UIAA, its member federations and the UN and UN agencies.
