Salewa Rockshow 2012, L'Aquila and its new beginning!
El Cap in L'Aquila will host the first leg of the Salewa Rockshow 2012. Daniele Adriani, the president of this historic climbing club, talks about the event which marks a yearned-for new beginning after the terrible earthquake which devastated the Italian city in 2009.
On Sunday, April 15, 2012 the El Cap climbing gym in L'Aquila will host the first round of the 2012 series which includes five stages. Ours is the only one in central Italy and finally the competitions begin once again in L'Aquila which, ever sine the earthquake on 6 April, was transformed into an emergency camp for circa 800 evacuees. After 2 and a half years and after some "restyling" in the form of new changing rooms, we can finally climb in the gym once more.
What remains is the regret of having lost so many people, in particular youngsters who changed sport or, even worse, switched from taking part in healthy sports to hanging out in shopping malls which, until only fairly recently, were the only place where the old and young could hang out and meet up.
So this re-opening can also be hailed as a small step towards normality, and with Sunday's competition and its special formula, we want to underline the fact that this is a sport for everyone, that you don't necessarily have to be a champion or super "slim" to have fun, and that a couple of hours spent indoors can be healthy fun and games for everyone."
