I Love Climbing Ulassai, the climbing meeting in Sardinia
Compared to the first edition, the second has been shifted from autumn to late spring, and instead of being 2 days long it is now 4 and therefore takes advantage of the National holiday at the start of June. Like last year, the organization of the event is run by two of Sardinia’s most experienced climbers, Gianluca Piras and Maurizio Oviglia.
Numerous events have been planned during these four days: 30 May will be dedicated to the Endurance climbing on the numerous crags in the area. After the ceremony participants will be able to enjoy a typical dinner in the village streets. The Sunday 31 May 31 the school children of Ulassai and Jerzu will receive an introduction to climbing, while in the afternoon there will be a caving lecture that will highlight the recently discovered local cave.
On 1 June there are two important initiatives: an crag bolting course held by experienced new routers - at the end of the day this will result in a completely new sector - and a guided walk to S’Accara. All proceeds will be donated to the Sherpa in the villages in the Khumbu valley, recently destroyed by the devastating earthquake. The initiative, the first of its kind in Sardinia, is called "Ulassai for Nepal".
Those who are not interested in the trek can climb below S’Accara in a new sport and trad crag and nevertheless make donations to the earthquake victims. On Tuesday 2 June the meeting will end with a treasure hunt, and a climbing course aimed at teaching safety maneuvers.
Apart from the actual event, Ulassai intends to be of interest for far more than just four days a year. There are lenity of new initiatives in store after summer (the main climbing season), because the local administration has fully understood that, after having invested heavily in the art of Maria Lai, it is now time to concentrate on the outdoors as this is the only viable form of tourism for these villages in the center of Sardinia blessed by Mother Nature.
