On Saturday 23 February 2002 the Committee for the Safeguarding of the Gran Sasso Water Resources will meet at Pescara, central Italy, to demonstrate against the planned third tunnel in the Gran Sasso. This mountain is the highest within central Italy and, thanks to its outstanding beauty, lies within National Park boundaries. The aim of the demonstration is to raise awareness of the environmental impact this third tunnel will have. The construction of the CNR nuclear physics laboratory caused the water level to drop 600m and geologists consider this the worst case of irreversible hydrological damage caused by man in Western Europe.
