Janja Garnbret and Kai Harada Boulder World Champions

On Friday night at Innsbruck in Austria Janja Garnbret from Slovenia was crowned Boulder World Champion. Akiyo Noguchi from Japan took silver, Staša Gejo from Serbia bronze. The men's competition was won on Saturday night by Japan's Kai Harada, ahead of Jongwon Chon from South Kore and Gregor Vezonik from Slovenia.

Janja Garnbret Bouldering World Champion! After dealing with the disappointment of not having become Lead World Champion just a few days ago, despite having topped all the routes in the qualifiers, the semi and the final (Jessica Pilz won having topped out 7 seconds faster), in the bouldering event Garnbret displayed her immense class winning a competition that was set by no means easy. The 19-year-old earned her victory on the first problem: there where two world champions, two overall World Cup winners and one European champion had failed, Garnbret literarily flew to the top. On the second, brtual, boulder only she reached a zone. Problem # 3 was flashed by Staša Gejo, sent second go by Akiyo Noguchi and fourth go by Garnbret. Only Noguchi sent the last porblem, while Jessica Pilz and Miho Nonka at least managed to clinch a zone. It’s worth noting that Petra Klinger, European champion, provisional second after the Semis and therefore no slouch when it comes to bouldering, failed to make  single zone, proving how difficult the problems were. With her victory Garnbret has written another page of sport climbing history, as she has become the first woman to become both Lead World Champion - in Paris in 2016 - and Boulder World Champion.

The new male Boulder World Champion is called Kai Harada, comes from Japan just like two other Innsbruck finalists, and he climbed with the ease and inspiration of a 19-year-old outsider who has nothing to lose. Many hot favourites were shut down in the Semis, such as Adam Ondra, Tomoa Nagasaki, Jernej Kruder, Jan Hojer, Jakob Schubert, Aleksei Rubtsov and Gabriele Moroni and in the finals Harada, with his four tops, was the undisputed king. Silver was won with three tops by South Korea’s Jongwon Chon, while bronze went to this season’s other revelation, Slovenia’s Gregor Vezonik who only last month won his first World Cup competition. Keita Watabe and Kokoro Fuji placed fourth and fifth respectively while the other huge surprise, England’s Nathan Phillips, placed sixth.
