The season’s highlight at the ice tower Eisturm Rabenstein is coming ever closer. In exactly one month, from 29 to 31 January 2016 the best ice climbers in the world will fight for World Cup points in Val Passiria.

At present, the Eisturm Rabenstein is still closed due to the unseasonally mild weather. This is expected to change in the coming days. "In the coming days temperatures will fall considerably. We can therefore finally start with ice production. Provided it stays cold, we expect to open the ice tower in the first week in January. The preparations for the World Cup have been in full swing for weeks, so that the best athletes in the world can once again experience an outstanding competition with us in South Tyrol”, explains Graf.

The first World Cup event of the 2015/16 season took place in December in the USA. After tour stops in South Korea and Switzerland the ice climbing elite pitches its tents in Corvara from Friday 29 January to Sunday 31 January 2016. "After the opening ceremony on Friday at the Piazza Terme in Merano, the traditional qualifications in difficulty climbing take place on Saturday. The speed competitions are also scheduled for Saturday. Sunday sees the semi finals and the finals in difficulty climbing”, Graf outlines the programme of the ice climbing World Cup in Val Passiria.

Last year during the World Cup in Corvara the World Championships titles in difficulty climbing were also awarded. Maxim Tomilov (Russia) won the World Championships title in difficulty climbing for the men and Woon Seon Shin (South Korea) secured victory for the women. Merano local athlete Angelika Rainer came second and Barbara Zwerger from Bolzano made seventh place. The speed climbing was won by the Russians Maria Krasavina and Vladimir Kartashev.
