Ice Climbing World Cup 2015: Angelika Rainer and Maxim Tomilov win in Saas Fee

In the men’s event Maxim Tomilov demonstrated his pure class by winning the third consecutive competition this season and beating his teammates Alexey Dengin and Nikolay Primerov. The men’s final was without a shadow of doubt one of the most technical ever; not everyone managed to climb past the delicate moves, so much so that even the strong Russian failed to top out and fell quite a few quickdraws below the end of the route. The competition was rendered even more spectacular thanks to plenty of ice and a horizontal trunk of wood and the huge audience really appreciated the efforts of the athletes. It’s worth pointing out the excellent attempt by Matteo Rivadossi, first excluded from the Semi-final and the excellent 5th place by 17-year-old Swissman Yannick Glatthard, a phenomenally good young climber!

The women's final was won by Angelika Rainer. Her fifth victory in Saas Fee, out of a total of nine Swiss competitions overall, is a superb result and the South Tyrolean said she was really happy with this recent result. The competition was stiff and right until the very last moment it was unclear who would clinch victory. The Italian, Korea’s Song HanNarai and Switzerland’s Petra Klingler all ran out of time and were separated by nothing more than a hold and a quickdraw. The ensuing final was thrilling and the spectators really loved it!

The next stage will be the World Championship at Rabenstein - Corvara, in Italy’s beautiful Val Passiria, above Meran where Angelika Rainer will compete in front of her home crowd to defend her World Champion title. The AVS Altoadige, that enrolls all Italian athletes, and the organisers of this unique event invite everyone to take part and watch the competition!
