Flavio Crespi and Angela Eiter win World Cup 2005
20/11 Historic Italian victory in Kranj: Flavio Crespi is the first Italian to win the Climbin World Cup Lead. The Women's World Cup was won by Angela Eiter from Austria.
Kranj 20 Novembre 2005. The ninth and final stage of the Climbing World Cup Lead 2005 took place in Kranj, Slovenia last weekend. Flavio Crespi from Italy and Angela Eiter from Austria won both the stage and the overall Cup, and both athletes topped out on all routes, legitimasing in the best possible manner their overall victory in 2005. This year's surprise entry Jorg Verhoeven from the Netherlands placed second in Kranj, while Cedric Lachat from Switzerland placed third. Verhoeven's second place secured him silver in the World Cup 2005, thanks also to Ramon Julian Puigblanque's surprise exclusion from the final: in the running with Crespi for the overall title, the Spaniard failed to qualify and placed a distant 14th. In the women's competition Eiter proved invincible, producing the only top in an exciting women's final. This is her second consecutive World Cup win and 8 victories and 1 second place show how total her current domination is. The two Slovenians Maja Vidmar and Natalija Gros placed second and third respectively, and Vidmar therefore won silver in 2005, while Caroline Ciavaldini from France won bronze. Crespi's victory in 2005 is a first for Italy, which has never won the prestigious title. The closest Italy got was way back in 1992 when Luca Zardini placed second overall behind Francois Legrand, and ahead of Tribout and Hirayama. The other major title, the World Championships, was won by Dino Lagni from Italy in 1999. As it happens Crespi also won the first ever Combined title (the best Lead and Boulder results), while Sandrine Levet from France won the Women's Combined.
