Six medals, of which one gold, three silver and two bronze: this is the amazing result of the Italian Youth Team that competed in Edinburgh, Scotland last weekend in the European Youth Championships Lead and Speed.

Giorgio Bendazzoli from Bassano del Grappa won the Youth B (Under 16) category, beating
Austria's Mathias Posch and France's Léo Ferrera. This is Bendazzoli's first big international success. Asja Gollo from Turin won the women's silver, slipping into second behind Slovenia's Janja Garnbret and ahead of her teammate Tjasa Slemensek. Gollo's success comes after having placed third in the European Lead Cup and won last year's European Bouldering Cup.

The other medals came from the Speed discipline: Alessandro Santoni, in the Juniors (Under 20), was beaten only by France's Quentin Nambot, but his silver (ahead of Sergei Luzhetskii from Russia) confirms he's one of the absolute best (last year the athlete from Trentino was crowned World champion in this discipline). Paolo Martignene won silver, too, in the Youth B category (beaten in the final by Russia's Denis Diachkov) represents the first major achievement at international level and is the culmination of his involvement with the Italian squad. Martignene beat his teammate Gian Luca Zodda. In the women's event, bronze went to Giulia Fossali, who was beaten by the two Russians Ekaterina Lugovenko and Anastasia Manuylova.

These six Italian medals are joined by another seven other top ten results, confirming that the Italian Youth squad is comprised of a large group of young athletes capable of leaving their mark in international competitions.
