First verdict from the European Championship in Yekaterinburg, Russia, with climbing's new school taking home the biggest prizes. The men's title went to the young and super powerful Austrian David Lama, who continues to amaze all, while the women's title went to 16 year old Charlotte Durif from France. Second place went to Cédric Lachat from Switzerland and Sandrine Levet from France, while third place went to Dmitry Sharafutdinov from Russia and Maja Vidmar from Slovenia, who thereby confirms her great 2006 season.

It seems superfluous to say that many were disappointed by this competition, and a quick glance at the results speaks a thousand words. Many favourites were excluded from the final, including Chabot competing in his first big international event this season (9th) and Mrazek and Verhoeven (10th equal). High calibre athletes such as Puigblanque, Zardini and Usobiaga finished 30th, 34th and 38th respectively, not even making it past the qualification round... thought provoking.

The women's event created surprises and disappointments too, one of which was Angela Eiter who had to make do with 5th place. Probably, like in Lecco 2004, the Austrian Champion may now think that the European title simply isn't destined to be hers.

A careful analysis of the various competition phases and "groups" leads to think of an extremely difficult and aleatory competition (and route setting). What remains though is that hurricane Lama and the unexpected star Durif failed to let all this bother them in the slightest. David confirmed that his current leadership of the World Cup is no one-off result, and his victory in the Bouldering World Cup in Hall last weekend further justifies this view. Start to tremble boys, the young monsters (of new school climbing) have arrived...
