Chamonix, World Cup Difficulty 2001 results
On13/07 Alexandre Chabot and Martina Cufar won the first stage of the World Cup Difficulty 2001.
13/07/2001 The Slovenian Martina Cufar and the Frenchman Alexandre Chabot got off to a great start in Chamonix at the end of last week by winning the first stage of the World Cup Difficulty 2001. Curiously, they improved upon last year’s result, when they both placed second. The competition was an enormous success from the organisers point of view, as thousands of people gathered beneath Mount Blanc to watch the Finals. The Finals were carried out simultaneously for the first time in World Cup history we believe, and although “bereft” of last year’s overall winners Liv Sansoz and Yuji Hirayama, nevertheless didn’t fail to get really enthuse the crowd. In the Men’s Final no athlete managed to reach the top and Serik Kazbekov (Ukraine) and Evgueni Ovtchinnikov (Russia) placed joint second behind Alexandre Chabot. The other athletes who qualified for the Final were François Auclair (France) 4th, Cristian Brenna (Italy) 5th, Gérôme Pouvreau (France) 6th, Iouri Douloub (Russia) 7th and Dino Lagni (Italy) 8th. Both Martina Cufar and Muriel Sarkany topped out in the Women’s Final, but Cufar’s earlier top assured her victory ahead of the Belgian, while Elena Ovtchinnikova placed third. Marietta Uhden placed fourth and young Natalija Gros from Slovenia (2nd at the European Youth World Cup at Arco recently) placed fifth. Olena Busheva, Bettina Schöpf and Go Mi-Sun placed 6th, 7th and 8th respectively. So the first stage of the World Cup Difficulty comes to a close, and all attention now shifts to the second stage of the Bouldering World Cup and the next International Master at Serre Chevalier.
