Bouldering World Cup. Levet and Dulac win in Birmingham
UIAA Worldcup Birmingham (GBR) 2004. 02-04 April 2004. Sandrine Levet and Daniel Dulac win the first stage of the Bouldering World Cup 2004.
The Climbing World Cup 2004 season finally got underway in Birmigham last weekend with the Bouldering event. Things started much where they had left off in the women's competition: Sandrine Levet, winner in 2003, beat arch rival Olga Bibik into second place, while Jenny Lavarda, more renowned for her Difficulty results, placed third. In the men's competition Daniel Dulac's indisputable class guaranteed him his second World Cup victory (after Grenoble 1999), while Kilian Fischhuber, third in Rovereto last year, produced his best ever World Cup performance to place second. And talking of best ever performances: making the most of the home crowd, Gareth Parry upped his seventh place in Edinburgh last year and placed third, while teammate Mark Croxall placed fourth. Title holder Jerome Meyer placed fifth. 36 men and 21 women competed in Birmingham. Some high calibre athletes such as Christian Core, Mauro Calibani, Salavat Rakhmetov and Serik Kazbekhov were absent, but the season has only just begun and the next stage, in Germany's Erlangen, is scheduled for 16-17 April.
