The first international judges and routesetter course for ice climbing will be held in Italy's Valle di Daone from 16 to 22 December 2002. The course will be held on the ice structure that will host, for the third year running, a stage of the third stage Ice World Cup. The course has been organized by the committee entitled Pareti di Cristallo, in close collaboration with the IWC and the ICCIC (International Comitee Climbing Competition). The French instructors Sam Beaugey and Erwan Lelann are some of the most experienced on the entire circuit. They will work together with Michael Boss from Switzerland, the President of the ICCIC and key figure in rendering the IWC a member of the UIAA (The International mountaineering and Climbing Federation).
Welcoming letter from the President of the UIAA Ian McNaught-Davis: ![]() On behalf of the International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation (UIAA) I would like to congratulate the organisers of the Ice Climbing World Cup event in Val Daone and everyone who has worked so hard to get ice climbing competitions to the high standard they are at today. In recognition of this achievement the UIAA at its General Assembly last October adopted ice climbing competitions as an official international sports discipline. This now means that the family of mountaineering is complete, and we are all united within one organisation to enjoy the freedom of mountain sports and competitions. The UIAA supports and develops all forms of mountaineering, climbing, hill walking and trekking at an international level and has over 90 member associations that have over 2.4 million individual active members. The UIAA is a member of the General Association of International Sports Federations, the International World Games Association and is recognized by the International Olympic Committee as representing the sports of mountaineering and climbing; and I look forward to raising the profile of ice climbing competitions with these international bodies for sport. I hope the Val Daone competition is an enjoyable success for the competitors, organisers and spectators. Good climbing. Ian McNaught-Davis UIAA President |
