In autumn 2015 Germany’s Pirmin Bertle finally concluded a project he’d attempted circa 150 times and for which, over the years, he lost at least 10 kilos: Meiose at the Tribune sector of Charmey in Switzerland. The route combines two existing climbs, namely Chomosome Y (9a) and Chromosome X (9a), and Bertle freed the link on his last day before setting sail for Patagonia with his young family where he freed what might well be the hardest boulder problem and the hardest sport climb in South America.

Bertle put forward a whopping 9b for Meiose, suggesting therefore that it is not only the most difficult sports climb in Switzerland, but also one of the hardest in the world. As is this norm, Bertle’s indication will need confirmation, in the meantime though here’s the video that retraces the entire process of that first ascent.
