Early esterday morning Jacopo Larcher successfully made the first repeat of Helmutant, a 9a sport climb freed in April 2014 by Michael Piccolruaz at Saustall, the smooth gneiss outcrop in the Schnalstal above Meran in Northern Italy.

The 25 year-old climber from Bolzano is currently enjoying a good run after a few months off due to finger injury - in Spain he recently onsighted an 8b+ before freeing an 8c+ at Lorüns in Austria - and his redpoint yesterday closed a circle opened four years ago when Helmutant was still a project.

"At that time I tried it a lot" Larcher told planetmountain.com "but there was always that difficult move that stopped me. I now managed the send, in just three days, much to my surprise. It’s nice to see that I’ve made some progress."

Jacopo Larcher is now in the planning stage of the expedition - the last details are being finalized - together with Austria’s Hansjörg Auer, Spain’s Iker Pou and Eneko Pou Pou and Belgium’s Siebe Vanhee. The trip has all the hallmarks of being very interesting indeed, and we’ll report about this in detail this summer.
