Replace the dangerous bolts at Masua. This is the new project by Gianluca Piras, one of the most active Sardinian climbers and bolters who last week decided to replace ageing anchors at one of the most historic and beautiful cliffs in Sardinia, Castello dell’Iride. The reason for this should be clear to everyone by now: the risk of 304 grade stainless steel bolts failing in marine environments caused by corrosion or stress corrosion cracking (SCC).

In truth Piras, together with Maurizio Oviglia, has been replacing bolts on the most at-risk routes at Masua (and not only) for several years now, but after replacing bolts on one of the classics last week, he decided to "cut to the chase" and restore about fifteen single pitches considered problematic. Given the size of the task, he has started a fundraiser to cover the expenses. This time anchors will be in titanium or 316L grade stainless steel. Furthermore, worn lower-offs will also be fixed or replaced.

As Oviglia writes "Castello dell'Iride needs no introduction, if you like this initiative , contribute, Gianluca will most certainly do a good job and the money will be well invested!"
