In July 2022 Germany's Fabian Buhl and Britain's Will Sim ventured deep in the Pakistan's Karakorum massif where thanks to their paragliders they explored a host of mountains and pulled off a series of new ski descents from the base in Karimabad in the Hunza Valley. Their standout climb was the long-awaited first ascent of the Gulmit Tower. Surrounded by highly crevassed glaciers, the approach by foot to this marvellous 5801m spire would have been long, complex and extremely dangerous on foot, but instead, the pair caught thermals and flew, thousands of vertical meters from the valley to the base of the climb in a matter of minutes before establishing their route. Their paraglider approach is ground-breaking and no doubt heralds a monumental change in the way mountains will be approached by the elite in the future.
