Hazel Findlay: grande salita di Magic Line a Yosemite

Hazel Findlay ha ripetuto Magic Line, la splendida fessura di arrampicata trad situata alla base della cascata Vernal Falls a Yosemite, salita per la prima volta nel 1996 da Ron Kauk. All’epoca Ron, una delle vere leggende della valle, aveva salito la via con i nuts ed i friends già piazzati, e nel novembre dell'anno scorso suo figlio Lonnie Kauk aveva salito la via piazzando tutte le protezioni. Gradata 5.14c, è da considerarsi una delle fessure più difficili in assoluto, non soltanto nella Yosemite Valley.

Findlay aveva tentata la via la prima volta nel novembre del 2018 e aveva subito capito che era non soltanto durissima, ma anche bellissima. "Sapevo che se mai fossi riuscita a salire un monotiro durissimo (per me) allora questa sarebbe stata la via. Semplicemente perché è cosi bella da vedere, così divertente da scalare, in un posto talmente magico." 

In seguito ad un allenamento specifico, quest’autunno la 30enne climber britannica si è recata a Yosemite specificamente per questa via, ignorando quindi El Capitan dove in passato aveva già salito le big wall Golden Gate (2011), Pre-Muir (2012), Freerider (2013) e la Salathé Wall (2017), e dopo essere caduta due volte dall’ultimo movimento difficile è arrivata la sua ripetizione in libera. All'ultimo tentativo dell’ultimo giorno prima del rientro in Gran Bretagna. E sì, anche lei ha piazzato tutte le protezioni durante la salita.

Yesterday I got to the last hard move on Magic Line and for half a moment I didn’t climb quite at my best, which was enough to spit me off. All at once I was heartbroken to have missed my chance and also more than excited to have got that far from the ground placing all the gear. At the rest before the final crux I reminded myself that although I didn’t know if I would do it or not, this unknown was not only OK but it was precisely why I was here. I was the only person responsible for what would happen in the next few minutes; it was entirely in my control and yet the outcome completely unknown. I just didn’t know what would happen. But the magic is in the not-knowing. How boring would climbing be if you always knew you were going to do it? - - It felt amazing to finally be at the upper crux on the lead having got through the nails lower crux. Who knows how many burns my finger will let me have before my season here is over but even if I don’t send this year I’m more than psyched to have got this far and know that a route this demanding is possible for me.
