Evocative climb wedged into a gulley, Erfault should not be climbed in avalanche prone conditions after snowfall. The icefall offers an exciting 60m central drip which we recommend you climb in a single push instead of dividing it into two by belaying after the first 35m.
Getting there
From the motoway exit Aosta Ovest drive to and then Valnontey. Park the car at the end of the road. Access
From Valnontey walk up the path to the huts at Valmiana. Pass these, continue on up to the Erfaulet bridge and cross this to ascend the valley which leads to a narrow cleft and the icefall. Descent
Belays equipped with pegs, threads and maillon rapide (back them up if necessary). Gear
Normal ice climbing gear. Notes
Grade: III/4+ (5 if climbed in a single 60m pitch).
