New ski descent on Capucin du Requin in Mont Blanc massif by Laurent Bibollet, Sam Favret, Julien Herry
French skiers Laurent Bibollet, Sam Favret and Julien Herry have scored an interesting first ski descent in the Mont Blanc massif with their run down what they have dubbed Un couloir sans fin on Capucin du Requin. Located above the famous Vallée Blanche in the Mont Blanc massif, the mountain sports an obvious 300m suspended couloir which a few days earlier Herry had realised could be accessed easily from its southwest face.
The Chamonix-based mountain guide teamed up with Laurent Bibollet and Sam Favret and, taking advantage of the last day of good weather and low avalanche risk, yesterday they approached the couloir quickly via the Vallée Blanche.
Favret led a 25m section of steep mixed terrain to reach a col, from where a 50m traverse on firm snow placed them in the middle of the couloir. They proceeded upwards and only the final 20m were not snowy enough to be skied, so they climbed to the top and rappelled this shortly afterwards. From here they continued down, past the junction, all the way to the lower part of the couloir which ends with a huge 100m drop.
Herry explained "Snow was variable but ok for riding, but most important it felt safe! Last turns above the big cliff at the bottom felt spicy and we didn’t dare to go too close to the void." Not wanting to rappell this, the trio climbed back up to the traverse they had used to access the gully a few hours early, and then skied safely back to Chamonix.
