Chris Sharma makes waves in Mallorca with Es Pontas
Chris Sharma continues to make waves for himself: this time the American splashes in headline news thanks to his ascent of a deep water solo project in Mallora, Spain.
According to Josh Lowell of Big Up productions, who filmed the ascent, the route climbs out the underbelly of a freestanding limestone arch called Es Pontas and features a seven foot dyno on a 50 degree overhang 30 feet above the water, followed by a bouldery crux to turn the lip at 50 feet.
Although the route goes ungraded, Sharma compares the buildup to the ascent to his Realization at Ceuse. And the added factor of being high above the water when working the moves brought things to a whole new level... Definitely not something for the faint-hearted!
Deep water soloing hotspots include Mallora, the cliffs off Dorset in England, and Croatia's Kornati Archipelago where two years ago Steve McClure established Ring of Fire, 8b+.
