Adam Ondra, new climbing projects after Silence at Flatanger

After having freed the world’s first 9c, Adam Ondra has discovered two new projects at Flatanger in Norway which could be as difficult as 9b+.

Adam Ondra wouldn’t be Ondra if he rested on his laurels. After his mid-September first ascent of Silence, the first 9c sport climb in the world, the 24-year old Czech climber continued climbing incessantly in the superb Flatanger cave in Norway. The result is two new 9b+ projects and the first ascent of a 9a+.

The 9a+ is the second pitch of Thor's Hammer, the mammoth line bolted by Magnus Midtboe six years ago and freed up to the first anchor by Ondra in 2012. The big project now is to link these two pitches. In practice, a 50 meter 9a is followed by these 30 new meters graded 9a+, which produce an 80-meter marathon through the huge underbelly of the granite cave. Boasting tricky and reachy moves, Ondra estimates this upside down journey somewhere in the region of 9b+, but as he states he "had no more time and endurance" to redpoint the outing during this trip.

The second project that Ondra attempted during the last few days is called Exchange project and this, too, may be in the 9b+ region. With the end of summer in sight Ondra has now left what is very much "his" cave, but there are another two first ascents to his name that certainly deserve attention: the 9a Flammen Inuti and the first ascent of Move Hard which links the main crux of Move with the second crux of Silence. Ondra redpointed this line in July and incredibly, despite the whopping 9b grade, almost flew under the radar.
