Industry insiders have said all along that it was bound to happen. After the Financial Times led the way in 2002 and The Wall Street journal recently announced it would implement a similar system at the start of 2011, there has been a underlying feeling that online publishers will, sooner rather than later, charge readers for their content.
Following this trend Explorersweb, one of the US’s most authoritative online magazines which concentrates mainly on Himalayan mountaineering and the exploration of the Poles, has now announced it will charge its readers for the content.
In its news report published today the website states “ExplorersWeb has arrived at the top, yet much more is ahead. 19813 stories after the start-up in New York, ExWeb now must find its financial feet. Time has come to bring in more language editors, update AdventureStats, expand the in-house staff to keep up with an increasing amount of content, and build new technology to connect all the adventurers of our world, spreading their unique spirit, knowledge and ideas.”
Top stories are now presented with a brief summary only and an invitation to subscribe in order to read the article in full. The annual cost is $36.50 and it is worth noting that 5% of all proceeds will be donated to Himalayan helicopter rescues. This change heralds an important step in the niche mountaineering industry and will no doubt be scrutinized by many.
