After months of preparation and years of waiting for precisely the right moment, on 17 August 2020 Britain’s Pete Whittaker soloed the Renshaw/Foulkes route on Kjerag in Norway. The 800m line was established in July 1985 by Lyndsey Foulkes and Adam Renshaw and although the difficulties check in at no more than E3, it is clear that with a route of this magnitude, technical difficulties are only a tiny part of the equation.

In fact, the north facing wall is rarely if ever completely dry and finding the right conditions is one of the biggest challenges Whittaker faced. He climbed the route for the first time only two days prior to his solo, which he then carried out in an extremely fast 2:25 hours.

After having made a name for himself for some extremely necky gritstone outings over a decade ago, the Brit then specialised in hard crack climbs with habitual climbing partner Tom Randall. He became the first to make a rope solo, all free ascent of El Capitan in under 24 hours, via the Freerider route in 2016, and in 2019 he made the third ascent of the 8c+ trad climb Recovery Drink at Jøssingfjord in Norway.
