Matteo Della Bordella, Silvan Schüpbach follow their instincts on Pizzo Badile
News just in from Val Bregaglia where Italy’s Matteo Della Bordella and Switzerland’s Silvan Schüpbach have climbed a logical winter connection on the northeast face of Piz Badile. Taking advantage of almost perfect conditions, the two mountaineers climbed a line they called Crossway of Friendship, dedicated to their friend Matteo Bernasconi who for many years yearned to establish a mixed climb up the legendary northeast face. The new variation climbs a first section of the North Ridge, then traverses across a series of ledges before following Linea Bianca, established in August 1978 by the Slovakians Igor Koller and Stanislav Silhan.
Writing on Instagram and addressing Bernasconi, Della Bordella stated: "It was your dream and not mine… That I got under this wall almost by chance, driven by curiosity and by the simple desire to live and adventure in the mountains with a friend, as you also liked. It's not the line you had imagined, it's not a new route, but rather a combination born by the instinct... That's what many times made your eyes shine bright: the north-east face of Badile in piolet traction!!"
