Peru's Huanka Punta provides another climb to Pou brothers, Manu Ponce
Third time’s a charm as the saying goes. Not that Cabeza Clava in 2019 and Super Canalizos from just a few days ago were bad. On ther contrary. Spanish alpinists Eneko Pou, Iker Pou and Manu Ponce have now established Leire, their third amazing outing on the same amazing SE Face of Huanka Punta in the Cordillera Blanca, Peru.
The 300m line was ascended in roughly seven hours and as for the other two, the difficulties are relatively straightforward, "merely" 6b. It’s worth noting however that the face in located at altitude and the summit peaks at 4882m, which is basically the same height as the highest mountain in the Alps, Mont Blanc.
The route has been described as "a line of enormous beauty with spectacular dihedrals, slabs zones and beautiful runnels, which are the hallmark of this place that will give a lot to talk about in the coming years." Except for three bolts - one on a pitch and the others on two separate belays - the route is protected with trad gear.
”We have opened the door to one of the best climbing areas in Peru." explained the Pou brothers, adding "The potential of this place for future generations is enormous."
