The Award. Inaugurated in 2000 in partnership with the American Alpine Club, each winning expedition receives a fund of US$ 2500 for its project. Although the Award is reserved exclusively to North American mountaineers at present, Helly Hansen is currently programming a Canadian and British version for 2002. Year 2000. The first edition was awarded to three projects heading to three different, remote parts of this planet. 'Year of the Dragon Expedition 2000' headed to the relatively unknown Kok Shal Tau mountain range, situated on the border between China and Kirghistan 'Hammer Thor 2000' heads to Baffin Island where Jim Beyer plans to ascend a new route on the enormous expanse of rock on Thor. 'Freeroraima! Gringo Tepui Expedition 2000' heads to the Amazon, where Zachary Barr, Peter Mortimer and Corey Nielson plan a first ascent on the north west face of Roraima, before continuing to Macizo de Chimanta in a canoe and making the first descent of Tepuis. The first results. Last summer the three members of the 'Year of the Dragon Expedition 2000' Mike Libecki, Josh Helling and Russ Mitrovich explored an as yet unnamed area of the unknown Kok Shal Tau mountain range. Probably the first to set foot in this area, this small team of mountaineers carried out some first ascents on rock, ice and mixed terrain and ski mountaineered using old Russian maps for orientation. Apart from mountaineering, the team also visited a series of old Buddhist tombs and caverns.
