Cho Oyu solo climbed by per Diego Giovannini

On 27/09/2003 Diego Giovannini reached the summit of Cho Oyu (8201m).

On 27 September 2003 the Italian mountaineer Diego Giovannini reached the summit of Cho Oyu (8201 m), the sixth highest mountain in the world, in a clean, fast ascent.

Giovannini's ambition was to climb the mountain by alpine style, without the use of supplementary oxygen and alone. On 16 September he established Advanced Base Camp, three days later he pitched Camp 1 at 6400m, and on the 20th he established Camp 2 at 7100m, before descending to Base Camp.

After waiting for 5 days for the weather to improve he set out on his summit bid, climbing straight to Camp 2 on 26 September. Setting out at 02.30 he reached the summit at 10.30, together with Marcel Kraaz from Switzerland in good weather conditions. Giovannini encountered slight problems during the descent due to a frozen right eye.
