Route
This classic route is one of the most repeated on the Marmolada. It follows a line up the South Pillar of Punta Penia, overlooking the Passo Ombretta, to the southwest of Marmolada’s immense south face. The Pillar is divided into three by two obvious ledges. The route initially leads up cracks and a few ramps to the second, larger ledge at about half-height. From here it continues up the characteristic, large yellow corner to exit via the water streak. This is reached after the crux of the route, a difficult crack and overhang. The finishing water streak is often wet due to melting ice from the glacier above.
Getting there
Take the motorway A22 Modena-Brennero and exit, after Bolzano, at Ora. Drive up the Val di Fiemme to Predazzo, then up the Val di Fassa to Canazei. Continue on up to Passo Fedaia and then descend to Malga Ciapela. From the car park at Malga Ciapela take path no. 610 to Rifugio Onorato Falier (2080m), nestled beneath the South Face of the Marmolada (1.15 hrs from Malga Ciapela). For the routes situated on Punta Penia, continue on past Rif. Falier along path no. 610 to Rif. Contrin (2016m) located between the Val Contrin and the Val Rosalia. Access

Descend along the Via Ferrata to Forcella Marmolada, then continue on down to Rif. Falier. Gear
Two 50 m ropes, pegs, full rack, plenty of Kevlar threads and slings. Notes
The route, if climbed free, is graded 6b, with one 6b+ section in the final pitches. The grades indicated on the topo are in line with those already published in the Marmolada guidebooks by Maurizio Giordani and Heinz Mariacher.

Un altro mondo rispetto a Punta Rocca e alla parete d'argento: il sole arriva tardi e il vento soffia freddo dalla val Rosalia. La roccia non è un gran che ed i tiri più duri sono normalmente bagnati. Un calo termico ed il colatoio finale si trasforma in un toboga di ghiaccio. Chapeau agli apritori!

Ripetuta la via due settimane dopo che lo hanno fatto gli autori del precedente commento: via in ottime condizioni (un po' bagnata la fessura finale) e abbastanza ben chiodata (anche se per lo più con chiodi Soldà-doc). Libera su tutti i tiri (un resting per me all'ultimo passo del tiro finale). Incredibile l'effetto di 10 giorni di secco! Quanto alla via, un viaggio "oltre le porte della percezione", a testimonianza del "pelo" dei nostri nonni. Il diedro giallo dev'essere ripetuto in 3 tiri. Non ci sono soste per una ripetizione in 2.

Nell'estate più asciutta degli ultimi decenni abbiamo trovato la via molto bagnata già dal diedro sottostante la prima cengia e praticamente fino in vetta.Ciò è stato forse dovuto alla fusione del ghiaccio presente internamente alle fessure per le alte temperature di quest'estate.Ne è conseguita una arrampicata molto sofferta e per niente divertente in presenza anche di una chiodatura non così abbondante da permettere una facile progressione in artificiale e non così sicura da potervi fare affidamento.La roccia non può essere peraltro definita "bella" perlomeno se confrontata con le altre vie della parete.In compenso la linea di salita è bellissima e la via merita di essere percorsa per rendersi conto di quanto forti erano gli arrampicatori dell'epoca.
