The Kaiserjäger War Path, lierally emperor's hunters, is a hike which really shouldn't be missed in Cortina, set deep in the majestic Ampezzo Dolomites, more precisely on Mount Lagazuoi. As the name suggests, this route is linked to the history of the Austrian emperor's hunters. The hike offers splendid views across the dramatic landscapes and is also a dive into history, as Lagazuoi was one of the main fronts during the First World War.
During the Great War, Mt. Lagazuoi was transformed by the Austrian soldiers into a stronghold, zigzagged by tunnels and trenches, many of which can still be seen today. These tunnels were dug by the Austrians and Italians during the war, in a fierce battle to control this strategic peak located between the passes Falzarego and Valparola.
During the Great War, the Kaiserjäger Path proved to be a vital communication route that connected the valley floor to the Austrian positions high up on the mountain. It was along this path that food, ammunition and essential gear were transported for the troops engaged in war up in the high mountains.
