24/01/2003 True to predicitions, Harald Berger and Ines Papert have won the Ice World Cup 2003, after winning the third and final stage in Switzerland's Saas Fee last weekend. Ines Papert thereby repeats her 2001 success, and adds this victory to her 2002 World Championship second place. Her impeccable score in 2003 (first in Pitztal, first in Valle di Daone and first in Saas-Fee - where she was the only athlete to top out in the Final) shows how complete her domination of the IWC really is. Last year's World Cup winner Ksenia Sdobnikova placed second in Switzerland to take second place overall, while Petra Müller placed third, Kirsten Buchmann fourth (but third overall) and Abby Watkins fifth. Harry Berger's road to victory was slighlty more complicated, and to defend his 2002 title he had to battle it out to the very last against a highly determined Alexei Tomilov, winner of the second stage in Daone. Both topped out in Saturday's Final, but Berger's faster time ensured him victory. Tomilov therefore had to "make do" with his second place, both in Saas Fee and in the IWC 2003, ahead of defending World Champion Evgeny Kryvosheytsev (fourth overall, beaten to third place by the Russian Dimitry Bychkov, winner in Pitztal and joint winner of the 2002 Cup together with Berger). The Ice World Cup Speed competition was won by the Russians Nikolai Chved and Maria Shabalina, who no doubt will be on top form for the World Championship in Kirov from 7-10 March.
