Last Saturday fifty-nine of the world’s best freeriders took part in the first stage of the Swatch Freeride World Tour by The North Face in Chamonix. After inspecting the face in the Brévant ski area on Friday, the male snowboarders dropped in early on Saturday morning to kick off the competition, won by America's Sammy Luebke with a score of 87.80, ahead of Britain's Sascha Hamm and 39-year-old Austrian Flo Orley who proved that despite the age gap, he's still a force to be reckoned with.

After low clouds subsided it was time for the male skiers: Loïc Collomb-Patton immediately demonstrated that he intended to defend his FWT Champion title with an outstanding run that earned him 92.75 points, ahead of Sweden's Reine Barkered and America's Drew Tabke.

In the women's snowboarding event Shannan Yates created a strong, smooth run straight down the fall line that proved unbeatable. Commenting after the event the American athlete stated "Today I picked a line that didn't get touched the whole run – no competitors went before me there – and it worked out perfect for me, fresh pow turns all the way down." Anne-Flore Marxer from France placed second, ahead of teammate, Elodie Mouthon, third.

When the women skiers dropped in conditions had changed somewhat, with low light and slight crust forcing the athletes to ski somewhat more prudently. Nevertheless Eva Walkner produced one of the runs of her life to celebrate a superb return to form after injury. She shared the podium with Christine Hargin from Sweden and Italy’s young Silvia Moser.
