Elie Chevieux killed in Kabul

On 09/05/2004 Elie Chevieux, the great climber and photographer, was found stoned to death in Kabul, Afghanistan.

"Swissinfo 11 mai 2004: Le passeport, découvert sur un des deux étrangers retrouvés morts dimanche à Kaboul, est celui du Genevois Elie Chevieux, un ancien champion du monde d'escalade en salle."

The dreaded now seems certain, despite the fact that the two bodies still need to be officially identified: Elie Chevieux is one of the two westeners stoned to death last Sunday in Kabul, Afghanistan. A murder that, for the way in which it was executed, needs no comment whatsoever. The second body is believed to be that of an ex-journalist who worked for the Südostschweiz newspaper.

Swiss Elie Chevieux was born in 1973. Photographer and climbing champion (in 1993 he won the Rockmaster in Arco, in '95 he won the Moscow stage of the World Cup Difficulty, and in '97 he placed 5th at the World Championships in Paris), Chevieux made the world's first ever 8b+ on-sight "Massey Fergusson", Calanques in 1995. That same year he repeated the performance by on-sighting "Maldita Maria" 8b+, at Cuenca, Spain.

"My son surely died for having taken one too many photos" declared Georges Chevieux, the father of Elie, to the newspaper "Le Matin" yesterday. Elie was travelling from Russia via Siberia, Japan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, and had planned to return home shortly.
