Alex Honnold, Hansjörg Auer and the Oscar winning Free Solo in Climbing Sparkling Moments #8
For a few hours on 3 June 3 2017 Alex Honnold managed, in his own words "to actually experience perfection" with his daunting free solo ascent of the Freerider route - a variant of the legendary Salathé on El Capitan in Yosemite freed by Alexander Huber in 1998. His feat was documented by Jimmy Chin and his wife Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi in Free Solo which, in 2019, won the most prestigious award in filmmaking, the Oscar for Best Documentary.
The eighth episode of La Sportiva's Climbing Sparkling Moments retraces this ascent destined to remain an absolute milestone in modern climbing history, as well as that of the young Austrian Hansjörg Auer who a decade earlier, on 29 April 2007, free soloed the Via Attraverso il Pesce, the Fish route, up the huge south face of the Marmolada in the Dolomites.
