The Ghosts from Above, Everest through the eyes of Renan Ozturk
In 2019 American mountaineer, photographer and filmmaker Renan Ozturk took part in an expedition to Everest that set itself the ambitious goal of solving one of the biggest mysteries in Himalayan mountaineering.
Led by Jamie McGuinness, Ozturk, Mark Synnott and the other members of the expedition set out to locate the body of Andrew Irvine, the British mountaineer last seen on 8 June 1924 with George Mallory, climbing upwards and high on the mountain’s NE Ridge during their historic attempt to reach the summit of Everest. In Irvine’s pocket, many believe, there may be his camera and, possibly, photos that could prove that the two managed to summit the highest mountain in the world 29 years before Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.
The Ghosts from Above follows the intense 2019 expedition. It is a portrait of immense hardship, of contrasting emotions, of limitless beauty and harsh reality. Directed by Taylor Rees, Jay MacMillan and Ozturk, it has to be seen.
