Paralpinism in Patagonia: French flight off Aiguille de l’S
In January and February 2020 French mountaineers Alban Alozy, Arnaud Bayol and Pierre Sancier belonging to the elite Chamonix-based High Mountain Military Group (GMHM) spent five weeks in Patagonia, during which they managed to "open" two new wingsuit flights: on 26 January off the West Face of Mojon Rojo in the Fitz Roy massif and, on 8 February in the same range, off Aiguille de l’S.
The trio followed the first route up the mountain, Cara Este established in 1968 by a French expedition led by Bernard Amy, then lept down the West Face above Besos to Pesos. 1300 vertical meters in a brace of shakes, with all their gear used for the ascent. The following clip documents their flight and is taken from Les Ailes de Patagonie, the documentary filmed with Antoine Bletton, Christophe Raylat and Sylvain Tesson for Disney Plus.
Note: Patagonia expert Rolando Garibotti points out "Note that flying, in all its forms, is forbidden in the PN Los Glaciares - El Chaltén. Although there is no specific regulation, any new activity has to be specifically authorized before it is permitted." It goes without saying that the Gmhm Chamonix had secured all the necessary permits.
