In autumn 2014 an expedition led by Hilaree O’Neill and comprised of Emily Harrington, Mark Jenkins, Renan Ozturk, Taylor Rees, Cory Richards travelled to Myanmar to scale Hkakabo Razi. Located on the border with Tibet, this utterly remote peak was first climbed in 1996 by Nyima Gyaltsen together with Japanese veteran Himalayan mountaineer Takashi Ozaki, who described the mountain as being "one of most difficult and dangerous mountains in the world."
Ozaki did not have GPS equipment to measure the exact height of the peak and the 2014 expedition aimed to verify whether it, or nearby Gamlang Razi, is the highest mountain in Southeast Asia. Although ultimately the six-person team was forced to back at 5,742m, an estimated 240m below the summit, the five arduous weeks through the jungle and on the slopes of this prohibitive mountain proved an adventure which none will ever forget.
