Mont Blanc Aiguille du Midi cable car closed for maintenance
Despite having been changed entirely in autumn 2017, following a series of careful checks some minor defaults have been discovered on the cable of the Aiguille du Midi cable car. As a result, the Compagnie du Mont Blanc ski lift company has decided to replace the cable once again.
The second section that leads from Plan de l'Aiguille to Aiguille du Midi is closed as of yesterday, while the first section that leads from Chamonix to Plan de l'Aiguille will remain open until 17 June, after which operations will stop entirely. The cable car will resume normal operations on Saturday 7 July.
The closure of the cable car comes at the start of the summer tourist season for Chamonix and it goes without saying that all alpine undertakings that were usually carried out in a single day have now become far more demanding. The Arête des Cosmiques, the granite multi-pitch rock climbs on Aiguille du Midi and the Midi-Plan ridge that joins Aiguille du Midi to Aiguille de Plan to name just three of the most famous and classic outings have suddenly become far less accessible.
Access from the Italian side of the mountain is guaranteed by the Skyway cable car that is running smoothly from Courmayeur. As it happens, this leads into the heart of some of the most beautiful and classic climbs in the entire Mont Blanc massif.
