The historic Carrel hut on the Matterhorn will be demolished and rebuilt close to its current location for safety reasons.

The announcement was made the other day by Luciano Caveri, councilor of the autonomous region of Valle d'Aosta and councilor for national mountain policies: "The works worth around 1 million 858 thousand euros involve the complete renovation of the Carrel hut, which needs to be moved a few dozen meters from its current spot. The decision was based on a series of geological surveys, carried out with the help of specific software, including the simulation of the falling rocks, which forces us to move the refuge".

Capanna Carrel currently stands at 3830m along the Lion's Ridge and is therefore the last bivouac on the Normal route on the Italian side of the mountain. The new hut is expected to open by summer 2024.
