Gasherbrum I for Meroi, Benet, Vuerich

Romano Benet, Nives Meroi, Luca Verich have successfully climbed both Gasherbrum I and II
Make that two! After the ascent of Gasherbrum II (8035m) on July 19, Nives Meroi, Romano Benet and Luca Vuerich have now reached the summit of Gasherbrum I (8068m).

Nives, Romano and Luca left Basecamp last Friday to reach Camp 2 where, due to the terrible weather conditions, they had to sit out a storm for an entire day. They then apidly reached Camp 4 (7300 m) from where, at 3.00am, they set off for their summit bid. The trio reached the top at 11.00am on 26/07, together with a strong group of Spanish mountaineers.

Nives Meroi reported that GI
proved to be extremely demanding, not only due to the adverse weather conditions, but also due to the technical difficulties. No ropes had been fixed, apart from the stretch between Camps 2 and 3, making progress more hazardous up the entire face.

The three are now resting in Bascamp,
prior to their departure for Broad Peak, where they will meet up with two other Italians, Alessandra Canestri and Marco Tossutti, who have already started their ascent for the summit.
