The expert Italian mountaineer and president of the legendary Ragni di Lecco group Matteo Della Bordella has joined the family of Karpos ambassadors. In recent years, Matteo – a lover of verticality, of real rock, of breathtaking walls – has received international recognition for his technical mountaineering. He is a perfect fit for Karpos, which grew out of the verticality of the Dolomites of Manrico Dell’Agnola, the rough limestone of Maurizio Giordani’s Marmolada, and Marco Confortola’s harsh white Himalayan walls. “MATTEO DELLA BORDELLA is an ideal ambassador for Karpos,” said Gioia Cremonese, Karpos brand manager, “as he fully embodies our values in terms of how we view our approach to the mountains. This is reflected in the lightness and reliability of our garments, which allow climbers to move quickly and always have a margin of safety. Matteo is a complete mountaineer for whom adventure is an essential component in everything he does, as it is for us at Karpos.” The partnership will also see Matteo deeply involved in testing and developing new ideas and designs for garments that the Karpos R&D department is creating, which are closely linked with his current and future mountaineering activities. “I am pleased and proud to be able to collaborate with Karpos,” Matteo said, “because I think the brand aligns perfectly with my mountaineering philosophy and will be able to provide me with products that are the most reliable, lightest weight and most suited to my needs. In addition, connecting with this great family and working side by side with mountaineering legends like Manrico Dall’Agnola and Maurizio Giordani makes me believe that all the conditions are in place for a successful relationship.”

Who is Matteo Della Bordella?

I’m 34 years old and I was born in Varese. My passion for mountaineering and the mountains began when I was 12, when I first started climbing with my father on the walls near our home and on the moderately difficult classic routes in the Alps. In 2008 I graduated from Carlo Cattaneo University in Castellanza with a degree in industrial engineering, but just a few years later I decided to try to dedicate myself completely to my greatest passion, mountaineering. From a mountaineering point of view, I can consider myself a citizen of Lecco by adoption, since I joined the prestigious Ragni di Lecco group back in 2006. The Ragni enabled me to grow as a mountaineer and as a person and to begin to travel the world in search of new challenges on virgin walls to climb. Over the years I’ve had the opportunity to climb in remote areas on fantastic walls, like those in Patagonia – an area I’m particularly fond of – as well as Greenland, Pakistan, India and Baffin Island. I like to practice a type of mountaineering that I call “by fair means,” in which the climber, by minimizing the use of technology and external assistance, meets the mountain on equal terms. For this reason, in my career as a mountaineer I’ve experienced many successes but also many failures, which have forced me to confront my limits as a man in the presence of nature, and these aborted attempts have often taught me more than the times I’ve reached the summit. I love the great vertical rock walls where the challenge is to reach the top – if possible, free climbing – with little equipment, via difficult routes that put me to the test. Still, beyond the more technical aspect of the climb, I consider myself a lover of adventure of all kinds, which is why I like to try to combine different disciplines and different types of challenges in my expeditions. Beyond the mountaineering aspect, on many of my trips just reaching the wall and returning afterward has been a major challenge.

Who is Karpos

At first we talked about lizards, ants and caterpillars – all animals that are able to overcome gravity without wings. But then we came to think that the concept should be represented by an element that could symbolize a man climbing, but also nature, which in this case should encompass and surround the man’s mind – and more. And thus was born that superhuman hand, a fusion between the digits of a man and those of a gecko, a prehistoric and magical reptile capable of walking on walls. And then the color ... green, the color of nature, because it is not we who conquer the mountains but the mountains that conquer us. We are the visionary mountaineers who imagine that love can cause holds to materialize under our fingers. We are the crazy idealists who think that with passion we can realize our dreams. We believed this, and we continue to believe it.
